What's So Wrong with Group Sex Anyway?

Two stories have gotten me depressed this week. The first is, as you’d imagine, the Matthew Johns story. He’s lost his high profile jobs with Channel 9 and the Melbourne Storm, as well as his reputation, over that group sex incident with a then 19 year old girl at a Christchurch hotel. Johns and other Cronulla Sharks fans are looked up to by thousands of young fans, so the event is tragic. If there’s any upside to the affair, it’s that our post-modern society is once again talking about right and wrong. This week I continually heard commentators say things like, ‘It’s not the legality of it, it’s the morality.’ For a culture that often says morality is down to personal choice, stories like this remind us there are moral absolutes that shouldn’t be crossed.

But the second story was a related one that you might’ve seen in the papers across the weekend—on the sexual lives of teenagers. It reported that kids as young as 14 are engaging in oral sex, intercourse and even group sex. Disturbing reading indeed. We shouldn’t over-estimate the problem—a LaTrobe University study showed that half of all school leavers haven’t had sexual intercourse—so it’s not a case that ‘every’ teenager is ‘doing it’. But we can’t underestimate the problem either. The Age newspaper noted the combination of drugs and alcopops in fueling these kinds of exploits.

So, we have a nation of rugby-loving kids that in the past week discovered the sexual exploits of their most-esteemed footy heroes, then stories of younger and younger kids doing things that would make the free-lovers of the 1970’s wince.

And in the midst of this the Christian faith says sex should be between one man and one woman, in marriage, for life. If ever there’s a reason to hear why that can be described as a credible lifestyle, it’s now.

So, I want you to tell me why the Christian view of sex is best. What’s wrong with teenagers having sex? What’s even wrong with group sex? A new generation awaits your articulate answer.

Megan:

The question needs to be asked, where is sex education in the church and in schools?

When it comes to sexuality we need to trust God and his guidelines.

Sharon :

My teenage daughter had a pregnancy, and one of my other teen daughters also had a relationship with an older man; These things lead to heartache. Teenagers should be discouraged from sex - it's too soon.
